Problem Gambling: Warning Signs and the Support Tools Available

How to recognise when betting is becoming a problem, which limits and self-exclusion tools can help, and where to find free, confidential support.

Problem Gambling: Warning Signs and the Support Tools Available

Most people who bet do so without harm, but for some it becomes a problem. Knowing the warning signs, and the tools and support that exist, makes it easier to act early. This guide is general information and not medical advice.

Warning signs

  • Betting more money, or for longer, than you planned.
  • Needing to bet larger amounts to feel the same excitement.
  • Chasing losses. See chasing losses.
  • Thinking about betting much of the time.
  • Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
  • Betting to escape stress, worry or low mood.
  • Lying to family or friends about how much you bet.
  • Borrowing money, selling things or missing bills to fund betting.
  • Neglecting work, study or relationships because of betting.

One of these does not mean you have a problem. If several sound familiar, it is a good moment to pause and talk to someone.

A quick self-check

  • Have I bet more than I could afford to lose?
  • Have I felt guilty about my betting?
  • Have people criticised my betting, or have I hidden it?
  • Have I tried to cut back and failed?

Answering yes to any of these is a reason to act. Many support organisations offer free online self-assessments.

Tools that can help straight away

  • Deposit and loss limits. Set how much you can deposit or lose per day, week or month. Increases usually take effect only after a delay, while decreases apply immediately.
  • Time-outs and cool-offs. Block your account for a period, from 24 hours to several weeks.
  • Self-exclusion. Block yourself from a bookmaker for months or years. Some countries run a single scheme that covers all licensed operators.
  • Reality checks. Reminders showing how long you have played and how much you have spent.
  • Blocking software. Apps that stop gambling websites and apps on your devices.
  • Bank and card controls. Many banks let you block gambling transactions.

Where to get support

Free, confidential help exists in most countries. Examples include GamCare and BeGambleAware in the UK, the National Council on Problem Gambling in the US, and Gamblers Anonymous, which has groups in many countries. Your doctor can also help, and so can a trusted friend or relative. Our Responsible Gambling page lists support organisations and explains how we handle advertising responsibly.

If you are in immediate distress or thinking of harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line right away.

If someone close to you is affected

  • Talk to them calmly and without blame.
  • Do not give or lend money to cover gambling debts.
  • Encourage them to use limits or self-exclusion, and to contact a support service.
  • Look after yourself too. Support groups exist for family and friends.

Betting in a healthier way

Keep betting within a fixed budget, treat it as entertainment and keep it separate from everyday money. See betting as entertainment and bankroll basics.
